Technology center to be laundry, dishwasher and small appliance innovation hub

Facility to employ more than 500 Michigan-based high-tech talent

Whirlpool Corporation today unveiled a new 153,000-square-foot technology center in St. Joseph, Mich. The $60+ million project expands and replaces much of the current St. Joseph Technology Center. This is the first of a three phase plan to redesign an iconic research and development facility that has been home to decades of appliance innovations.

“In 1911, the first electric washing machines were built here in St. Joseph, Michigan, and we continue to grow that legacy with the investment in this new, state-of-the-art technology center,” said Marc Bitzer, Whirlpool chairman and CEO. “We are committed to this community, and to improving life at home for families around the world. This new technology hub helps enable both of these promises by creating a new space where future innovation will come to life.”

The expanded St. Joseph Technology Center is LEED Silver certified, a globally recognized ranking of sustainability achievement and leadership. The work that is done in this new facility will be focused on delivering great consumer solutions through the washers, dryers, dishwashers, and small appliance products designed and tested here including the iconic KitchenAid Stand Mixer. The facility employs more than 500 technicians, engineers, designers and adjacent roles, and contains 21 testing labs.

“This $60 million investment by Whirlpool builds on the company’s longstanding commitment to Southwest Michigan,” said Gov. Whitmer. “This transformative project will help Whirlpool attract top talent, put more people on paths to good-paying, high-skill jobs, and continue our mission to help anyone ‘make it’ in Michigan. Our unemployment rate is the lowest it has been in 23 years, we are moving forward on housing and community revitalization projects across the state, and we just delivered a bipartisan budget to lower costs, expand workforce programs, and power economic development. We look forward to continuing our work together to build a bright future.”

This $60 million investment by Whirlpool builds on the company’s longstanding commitment to Southwest Michigan,” said Gov. Whitmer.

Whirlpool Corp. has invested more than $230 million in new or expanded facilities in the St. Joseph and Benton Harbor communities in the last ten years. The company also invested an additional $23 million in the 80-unit Emma Jean Hull Flats housing development in Benton Harbor which opened in June.

“This new building offers state-of-the-art technology for product design, development and testing to help address consumer needs now and for the future,” said Pam Klyn, Whirlpool executive vice president of corporate relations and sustainability. “The appliances designed within the four walls of this new technology center will represent new levels of innovation and sustainability so consumers can feel confident they are making the right choice for their lifestyle and the environment. “

Whirlpool Corp. products have continuously improved water and energy efficiency while increasing performance benefits to consumers for decades. The average clothes washers built today use nearly 78% less energy than those built in 1992, while their capacity has increased by 60%. In addition, most dishwashers developed by the company are already 3 to 4 times more water-efficient than hand washing – with the potential to save over 2,500 gallons of water per home each year.

As employees begin to transition to the new building, work will continue into 2024 to complete the next phases of the St. Joseph Technology Center project including renovation of the facade of the remaining portion and increased parking to improve access for employees.

Representatives from Whirlpool attended the 5th Housing and Habitat Forum, Latin America and the Caribbean in Bogota, Colombia July 31 to August 3, 2023. The event is organized by Habitat for Humanity with strategic allies and hosted by the Urban Housing Practitioners Hub (UHPH).

The focus of the 2023 event was housing as a necessary tool to address the current climate and social crises, which has been exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic that has increased the housing deficit.

Juan Carlos Puente, president of Whirlpool Latin America and executive vice president of Whirlpool Corporation addressed Private Sector Commitments in Support of Resilient Communities. In addition, Rosa Skinner, Whirlpool Corporation global social responsibility senior manager, was part of a high-level dialogue about actions toward carbon neutrality and climate change mitigation and presented the Whirlpool sponsored innovation award.

This global housing forum is a major feature of the multifaceted work between Whirlpool Corporation and Habitat for Humanity International. Whirlpool Corporation is a sponsor of these forums, which bring together a spectrum of thought leaders and experts to spur innovation that helps meet the housing needs of the planet’s growing population. In attendance were governors and mayors from many Latin American countries including the Mayor of Bogota and representatives from the UN World Habitat. Whirlpool representatives convened with leaders from governments, the private sector, academia, civil society, community, banks and Habitat for Humanity to discuss the status of housing in the region as well as gather knowledge and facilitate comprehensive, innovative and scalable solutions that contribute to the forum’s sustainability goals and agenda.

BuildBetter with Whirlpool Program Expanded to Include Dishwashers https://www.whirlpoolcorp.com/buildbetter-with-whirlpool-program-expanded-to-include-dishwashers/ Thu, 27 Jul 2023 18:18:57 +0000 https://whirlpoolcorp.com/?p=241232 BuildBetter with Whirlpool Program Expanded to Include Dishwashers 4

Whirlpool Corporation is including high-efficiency dishwashers for homes built as part of the company’s BuildBetter with Whirlpool initiative with Habitat for Humanity International. The BuildBetter with Whirlpool program is building 250 climate resilient, energy-efficient homes by 2025, with a goal of delivering an almost 15 percent increase in energy efficiency compared to conventional homes.

“Whirlpool Corporation’s 24 years of partnership with Habitat for Humanity International has touched lives around the world,” said Deb O’Connor, director of corporate reputation at Whirlpool Corporation. “Donating dishwashers to the BuildBetter with Whirlpool homes is another opportunity to help Habitat homeowners be more sustainable and save money.”

Started in 2021, Habitat for Humanity’s BuildBetter with Whirlpool initiative has three phases. In the first phase, a total of 58 energy and hazard resilience projects were completed in 20 states. The second phase of the program, currently in progress, will build upon the success of the first phase. Upon completion, there will be 85 energy and hazard resilience projects in 31 states, with 12 in areas where Whirlpool has plant locations. The third phase includes 120 projects in 82 locations. Given the fact that only 68% of American households have a dishwasher¹, including the appliance in BuildBetter with Whirlpool homes serves to underscore the sustainability benefits of a dishwasher.

“Homeowners don’t realize it, but the average dishwasher today uses 50 percent less water than ones made 25 years ago²,” said Beat Stocker, senior director of sustainability at Whirlpool Corporation. “On top of that, a dishwasher is three to four times more water-efficient than hand washing — saving over 2,500 gallons of water per home per year³.

BuildBetter with Whirlpool homes – both code-plus and renewable energy grants — will measure resiliency through the Home Energy Rating System, or HERS, a nationally recognized energy-use rating scale for residential construction. The lower the number, the less energy used. A typical home in the U.S. is at about 100 or more. The homes in the BuildBetter with Whirlpool program will have a rating of 60 or below, with some going below zero due to on-site power generation and renewable energy systems.

Inclusion and diversity is an enduring value at Whirlpool Corp. The company has continued to prioritize meaningful actions that cultivate an even stronger inclusive and diverse workplace. In the past year, Whirlpool Corp. introduced Empower, a multi-month program designed to develop high-potential manager- and senior-manager-level women in Latin America and Asia; launched new family and fertility benefits in the U.S.; and hosted the fourth annual global inclusion campaign, offering 200 hours of micro-learning courses with an emphasis on the importance of inclusive behaviors. The sample included about 40,000 women who were asked to rate their company based on four different criteria, including working environment, salary, employee diversity and whether they would recommend their company. These answers were compared to those of 20,000 men to evaluate any differences in perception of the workplace.

Whirlpool Poland Employees Renovate Family Foster House with Habitat For Humanity https://www.whirlpoolcorp.com/whirlpool-poland-employees-renovate-family-foster-house-with-habitat-for-humanity/ Thu, 20 Jul 2023 19:18:02 +0000 https://whirlpoolcorp.com/?p=241202 group photo of Whirlpool Corporation Poland Employees at the build site

Two days full of hard work yielded results. Here’s what happened recently near Wroclaw, Poland as part of the Whirlpool House + Home program and in cooperation with Habitat for Humanity Poland.

The Family Foster house in Wierzbice was created by Jerzy and Maciejka – visual artists and parents with huge hearts. In addition to raising their biological children, they also decided to adopt four children with special needs.

The house where the family lives is generally adapted to their needs. For example, in 2017, Habitat for Humanity Poland helped the family by paving the path around the garden so that wheelchair users could also use it. But after 6 years the premises needed to be refreshed: the garden became overgrown, and the paved walkway became impassable for a wheelchair. In addition, the rear entrance to the property was not usable, due to the family’s inability to keep it in good order, and at some point they no longer had the strength to bring it up to proper condition.

Whirlpool volunteers from all over Poland took part to support this family in Wierzbice. On July 3 and 4, over 20 volunteers, from Radomsko, Wrocław, Łódź and Warsaw, representing all polish locations of Whirlpool Corporation, helped repaint the whole house inside and do all the garden work. Employees worked through intense heat and other challenges and were able to see how different problems people have, what they face on a daily basis, and how life’s priorities change when caring for orphaned, disabled children.

As a result of these two days of work, the team was able to update the house inside, clean it, repaint the rooms and deal with places that were inaccessible to the hosts, in addition to bringing the garden up to scratch, giving the family a lot of pleasant space to enjoy throughout the summer. The family returned the favor with sincere thanks, smiles and a delicious fresh yeast cake with garden strawberries, making everyone feel at home.

“Our action aroused great interest. It exceeded our expectations. We had a huge number of applications from our employees wanting to take part in the action. Therefore, we increased the originally assumed number of volunteers. Already on the spot, our colleagues confirmed great commitment and willingness to help. It is very uplifting and wonderful to be part of such a community and to be able to help those who need it together” – Zygmunt Łopalewski Central Europe Communications & Government Relations Sr. Manager

Whirlpool Corporation Named to Selling Power’s 2023 “50 Best Companies to Sell For” https://www.whirlpoolcorp.com/whirlpool-corporation-named-to-selling-powers-2023-50-best-companies-to-sell-for/ Wed, 12 Jul 2023 20:37:01 +0000 https://whirlpoolcorp.com/?p=241192 Whirlpool Corporation Named to Selling Power’s 2023 “50 Best Companies to Sell For” 10

Whirlpool Corporation’s North American sales organization has been recognized as one of Selling Power magazine’s “50 Best Companies to Sell For.” The list, published in the July/August 2023 issue of Selling Power, includes companies leading the charge in perseverance and determination.

“We’re excited to be recognized alongside the other excellent companies on this year’s list,” said Dave Cichocki, vice president for U.S. sales at Whirlpool Corp. “Our inclusion on this list demonstrates the U.S. sales team’s dedication to improving life at home for consumers.”

Selling Power’s research team gathered data across four key areas to create this year’s list: company overview, compensation and benefits, training and sales enablement, and diversity and inclusion. Companies were ranked in each of the four categories to determine the final list. The methodology is the product of years of research, and Selling Power continues to revise and refine the approach each year. The companies included are a mix of sizes ranging from medium to enterprise.

“As companies are facing economic headwinds, sales organizations are sharpening their focus on sales talent. What attracts salespeople to work for these leading organizations is their great culture, their commitment to diversity, and their steady support of the sales team by servant leadership that focuses on creating customer value and a meaningful work environment that offers unlimited opportunities to win,” says Gerhard Gschwandtner, founder and CEO of Selling Power.
